Jesus established the church not as a building but as a movement of people committed to Him and each other. In Matthew 16, He declares He will build His church on the foundation of those who truly know Him, giving it authority that will withstand opposition. Jesus expects His followers to have specific, accountable relationships with other believers, not just general affection for Christians everywhere. Church membership makes our commitment official, creates a framework for mutual care, and helps us grow in maturity through practicing specific love. If we're committed to Jesus, we must be committed to His people.
