In ancient times, stories of gods and divine beings were common, but Jesus stood apart as uniquely different. While mythological gods often appeared among humans for selfish reasons, Jesus demonstrated a radically different approach through humility and sacrifice.

How Was Jesus Different from Other Ancient Gods?

Unlike the Greek and Roman deities who used their power for personal gain, Jesus chose a path of servanthood. While gods like Zeus appeared to humans to satisfy their desires, Jesus came to serve others and ultimately sacrifice himself. This stark contrast made Jesus stand out in the ancient world.

What Does Jesus' Humility Teach Us?

Jesus demonstrated true humility by:

  • Not exploiting his divine status
  • Taking the form of a servant
  • Becoming obedient to death on a cross
  • Putting others' needs before his own

This example sets a pattern for how Christians should live - not seeking personal gain but looking to serve others sacrificially.

Why is Jesus' Exaltation Significant?

Because Jesus humbled himself completely, God highly exalted him above all others. This exaltation means:

  • He understands human suffering and rejection
  • He has the power and authority to help us
  • He can relate to our struggles while having the resources to meet our needs
  • He serves as our advocate and intercessor
What Does This Mean for Us Today?

The gospel message reveals that Jesus will one day be acknowledged by all as Lord. This has two important implications:

  • We need to share this truth with others before it's too late
  • We should align our lives with Jesus' example of humble service
Life Application

Consider these questions this week:

  • In what ways am I putting myself first instead of serving others?
  • How can I better reflect Jesus' humility in my daily interactions?
  • Who needs to hear about Jesus' lordship in my sphere of influence?

Challenge: Memorize Philippians 2:5-11 as a reminder of Jesus' example and use it to share his story with others. Look for one specific way each day to put others' needs before your own, following Jesus' model of humble service.
